DETROIT (February 5, 2002) - Championship Auto Racing Teams, Inc. (CART) President & CEO Christopher R. Pook issued the following statement today regarding the suspension of auto racing at Chicago Motor Speedway:

"We were very sorry to hear about the decision regarding Chicago Motor Speedway today and remain grateful to the principals behind the organization," Pook said. "We had three great years there and we are appreciative of the opportunity to participate. However, the City of Chicago and its great race fans remain important to CART, our sponsors and our teams and by no means does this close the door on Chicago for the CART FedEx Championship Series in the future."

Additionally, series officials are presently reviewing options for an event to replace the Chicago race on the 2002 FedEx Championship Series schedule in a major market not yet covered by CART.
