INDIANAPOLIS, IN, October 18, 1999 -- CARA Charities announces the live auction items that will be available for bid at Runway Madness II presented by FedEx charity fundraising show Friday, October 29, 1999 at the Lockheed Hanger at the Ontario Airport in Ontario, California starting at 6 p.m. Actor Paul Newman, who is co-owner of the CART Newman/Haas race team and a former race car driver, has volunteered his services to drive a lucky bidder around a CART circuit during the 2000 season in a PPG Pace car. Retired champion driver Rick Mears will also offer his chauffeur's hat and PPG Pace car to a second successful bidder.
Another actor and CART racing fan, Anthony Edwards, is offering a day on the set of his hit TV series "ER" and lunch on the set.
Legendary driver and car builder Carroll Shelby has donated a one-year lease on a Shelby 289 FIA Street car to the live auction. One of these cars will be on display at the event.
For those with a secret desire to show their friends that they really are faster than Dario Franchitti and Juan Montoya, there is an opportunity to race in a Chrysler Neon Celebrity series event, along with a three-day Skip Barber Racing School package.
Motorsports artist Bill Patterson will create a painting on stage in 15 minutes as bidding for the completed work goes on among the cheers of the crowd.
Last year a quilt (knitted by nuns!) of the drivers underwear was a big hit. This year they are preparing another racing quilt with CART FedEx team and sponsor logos.
CARA Charities and the Children's Fund of San Bernardino County are the recipients of the fundraiser. The theme on Halloween weekend is "A Mystical Hallows Eve" and guests are encouraged to come in costume.
Tickets for this event are nearly sold out. Individual tickets and tables are still available, although a sell-out crowd of 1,500 is expected and tickets will not be sold at the door. For information on tickets, call Kem Stinger at CART (248) 362-8800 x304 and for sponsorship opportunities, call CARA Charities.
