CART Warm-up

The session started a handful of drivers taking to the track and Alex Zanardi, Paul Tracy and Tony Kanaan taking staying there for a few laps, putting in 1:03s. Polesitter Bryan Herta went out for one lap then came back in. About six laps into the session a bunch of cars came out and the times started coming down, but Zanardi and Tracy stayed on top. Nine minutes in, Dario Franchitti and Mark Blundell started setting fast times and then Herta and Al Unser Jr joined in, each topping the standing along the way. With eighteen minutes left, the order was Blundell, Unser, Herta, Carpentier, Zanardi and Franchitti. At this time, Michael Andretti was 11th, Mauricio Gugelmin was 13th, Jimmy Vasser was 15th, Scott Pruett was 16th and Greg Moore was 18th. Then, Moore moved up to 9th. All this shuffling pushed Paul Tracy down to 12th.

With 13 minutes to go, Dennis Vitolo spun off and the session was red-flagged. The order was Blundell, Franchitti, Herta, Unser, Carpentier, Zanardi, Lehto, Moore, Fernandez, Ribiero, Kanaan, Tracy, Castro-Neves, Pruett, Andretti, Papis, Hearn and Gugelmin.

With 10 minutes to go, the session was restarted and Zanardi and Moore tangled going into turns 8 and 9, but both stayed on the track. Gugelmin moved up to 7th and then de Ferran moved up to 6th, knocking Gugelmin back down. Then Gugelmin moved up to 6th. Zanardi, Rahal and Pruett all made good improvements in the last few minutes, with Zanardi and Rahal getting their top times on laps completed after the checkered flag flew.

Unlike yesterday, no one managed to lap in under a minute. The track temperature was much cooler than yesterday, but should really warm-up by this afternoon.

Christian Fittipaldi did not participate in the warm-up session.
