LONG BEACH, Calif., April 30, 2000 - Driver Bryan Herta brought the #5 Walker Racing avex/Honda/Reynard to the finish line in 20th place today during the Rio 200 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Herta is substituting in his second scheduled event for Walker Racing and regular driver Shinji Nakano while Nakano continues to recover from injuries sustained in a private testing accident in Milwaukee on March 31. Herta had moved up two positions on the racetrack after his first scheduled pit stop, but on lap 44 he slowed dramatically coming out of Turn 1, and pulled his car to a stop on the warm-up lane of the racetrack.
"We experienced a major gearbox failure," said team owner Derrick Walker. "It was a shame really, other than a couple of guys out there we were running as quick as anybody. The transmission has been our biggest concern so far this year."
Herta both started and ended the race in 20th position. The Walker Race team is very optimistic about the chances of injured driver Nakano being back for the race in Motegi, Japan on May 13. CART will allow the Walker race team a special test at Motegi on Wednesday, May 10.
"We are grateful to CART for giving us a short test run at Motegi to give Shinji a chance to get back in the groove," said Walker. "Shinji's presence in the race at Motegi will please the huge following of fans in Japan that follow Shinji and CART racing."
The next round of the CART FedEx Championship Series will be the Firestone Firehawk 500, which will be contested during the weekend of May 11 - 13 at Twin Ring Motegi, Japan. The race will be broadcast on a tape-delayed basis at 1 p.m. (ET) on ABC. Walker Racing's corporate sponsor partners are avex, Alpine, J. Communications, Mitsuba, SpeedWRX, NGK, St. Elmo Steakhouse, Honda, Reynard and Firestone.
