Scotland's Dario Franchitti faced the British press when he spent time at the brand new Rockingham Motor Speedway near Corby, which will host the inaugural UK round of the CART FedEx Championship Series on September 22nd.
Dario, currently lying third in the CART drivers championship, last visited the track in March when construction work was proceeding apace. Yesterday though was his first opportunity to sample Rockingham's 1.5-mile banked oval track from a racing drivers perspective at over 100mph in a Honda S2000 sports car.
It's really come on since I last visited - with everything now nearly complete, I'm really looking forward to racing in front of British fans again" said Franchitti. "Rockingham is a unique place in the UK and looks to be very different to the ovals in the US, with short straights and a corner ever few seconds. It will be both technically and physically demanding. The track is smooth and there should be a lot of opportunities for overtaking here. I am really looking forward to getting into a race car here it front of my home crowd."
The twenty-eight year old Scot is attempting to become the first British driver to lift America's premier racing title since Nigel Mansell achieved the feat in 1993. In 1999 he nearly achieved his goal when he scored the same number of points as current Williams Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya only to lose out to the young Colombian when race wins were taken into account. Last year was a lean one for Dario, but he has bounced back, notching up four podium finishes, including one win, in eleven races this season.
The CART Fed Ex Championship series, or Champ Cars, is America's premier open wheeled racing series. With average lap speeds of over 220 mph the drivers that take part can truly claim to be the fastest racing drivers on the planet.
Round 17 of the CART FedEx Championship Series will take place at Rockingham Motor Speedway September 20th-22nd. Ticket Hotline - 08700 134044.
