Champ Car: Alex Yoong looks forward to "home" race at Brands Hatch's London Champ Car Trophy.
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - May 1, 2003 - Malaysia's Alex Yoong boarded the Malaysia Airlines flight from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport to London last night en route to his third Champ Car race of the 2003 Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series championship with Dale Coyne Racing.
The London Champ Car Trophy race will be held at what Yoong considers to be his other "home" circuit, Brands Hatch, where he got on his first Formula 3 podium when he finished second in 1999 with the Alan Docking team. Yoong honed his early race career in the UK between 1996 and 1999.
"I have good memories from the Brands Hatch circuit and I am really looking forward to returning to race there," said Yoong, minutes before leaving for London. "It will be most challenging and a lot of hard work to race 165 laps of the 1.93 km (1.19 mile) Indy circuit."
On tyre wear and race strategies, Yoong said, "I don't think tyre wear will be an issue as the Bridgestones stand up pretty well. What is a potential issue is how our race strategies hold up during the race. You don't want to pit at the wrong time to find yourself one lap behind the lead cars as can easily happen on such a short circuit."
For the record, of the 19 starters this weekend, only Briton, Darren Manning, Brazilian, Mario Haberfeld and Yoong have ever raced on the short oval-like Indy circuit of Brands Hatch - when all three competed in the British Formula 3 Championships in the late 90's.
The Dale Coyne Racing Lola/Ford/Bridgestone #11, which Yoong will be driving this weekend, will carry "Malaysia" on the sidepods for the Brands Hatch race on Bank Holiday - Monday, May 5th.
Malaysia Airlines, which is Yoong's official carrier, will also appear on Yoong's Arai helmet and race suit for the race.
The first qualifying session will begin at 2:30 p.m. GMT on Saturday, while the second qualifier starts at 1:45 p.m. GMT, Sunday. The race is scheduled to commence on Monday, at 2 p.m. GMT. Live timings and commentary can be accessed from www.cart.com.
