1993 Barber Pro Series Champion Kenny Brack topped both practice sessions for the first time in his CART FedEx career. With practice for the Target Grand Prix of Chicago complete, Brack brought his oval racing expertise to post a 22.557 sec lap around the 1-mile Chicago oval. After leading the morning session, the 1999 Indy 500 Champion was able to shave another tenth of a second off of his time heading into Saturday’s final qualifying session.

Three other Skip Barber trained drivers joined Brack among the first ten in qualifying. Detroit Grand Prix winner Helio Castroneves posted the third quickest time, 0.134 sec. shy of Brack’s quick time. Tony Kanaan, returning from his Detroit injuries showed that his pace did not suffer during his convalescence, posting the fourth fastest time. Finally, Juan Montoya continues to show his oval racing form by placing sixth fastest. Final qualifying for the Sunday race will take place Saturday afternoon.

The Dayton Indy Lights Series is also running in Chicago and Barber Dodge Pro Series alumni continue to dominate the Top-10. Two-time Barber Dodge champion Jeff Simmons was one-tenth of second off of the quickest time set during practice on Friday. He resides second quick. Third and fourth quick are Tony Renna and Chris Menninga while Todd Snyder, two-time runner up to Simmons, sits eighth on the grid. Qualifying for the Lights drivers will also take place Saturday afternoon.
