Kenny Brack qualified in pole position for the Rockingham 500. His time of 24.908s set midway during in the session was enough to say ahead of the rest of the field. Michael Andretti made the closest challenge, finishing just 0.02 second behind. In fact the top six drivers all qualified within 0.1 seconds and the entire field within 0.7 seconds.
The first qualifying run was by British rookie Darren Manning who a respectable time of 25.441 on his second lap which kept him fastest after several runs by other drivers. This time improved on his free practice time and Manning was happy that he had achieved such a good time with so little running and a set-up that still needed some work. Ultimately he qualified 17th.
Brack got provisional pole position with a blistering second lap. He was one of the first of the faster runners to do a flying lap and he maintained this lead for the rest of the session. "Today was good", said Brack. "This is our fourth or fifth oval together at Ganassi and it is starting to come together to work out what we need to do to be fast at ovals."
Patrick Carpentier struggled during his run and his second lap was slower than his first. He had an overheating engine which had knock-on effect on other components and he finished over a quarter of a second behind in tenth.
Da Matta put in two strong and consistant laps but just couldn't quite break onto the front row, eventually finishing third. "Yes I'm happy", he said. "It [the result] doesn't mean a lot because it's a 500km race. I felt like I could have gone for pole, but I'm happy".
Franchitti said that his first lap was good but made a mistake on his second lap and lost momentum in Turn 2. He was optimistic though: "Hopefully we can run a good stragergy in the race and make some gains".
Disappointment of the session was Alex Tagliani who only ended up ninth after his stunning free practice form.
Scott Dixon withdrew the entry of his car which qualified 16th due to mechanical problems and did another run with his X car. He again qualified 16th.
The Rockinhgham 500 will take place at 12:30GMT on Saturday, with the early morning warm-up starting at 8:30GMT.
