CICERO, IL . . . For the third time in the last four CART events rain showers interrupted the qualifying, this time causing a 45-minute delay in the qualifying for Sunday's Chicago Grand Prix (4:00 PM EDT on ABC). Kenny Brack qualified eighth overall with a fast lap of 158.715 mph while Max Papis who made his qualifying run in a steady drizzle qualified 25th at 154.453 mph.
Papis endured a frustrating Saturday at Chicago Motor Speedway losing critical track time in the morning session due to mechanical and engine problems on his #7 Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola.
Shell driver Kenny Brack, the CART points leader, waited patiently through the rain delay and finally made his qualifying run last overall due to his position atop the standings. Due to the changing track conditions Brack's car didn't handle the same as it did on Friday when he was second quick or Saturday morning when he was third overall.
Tony Kanaan captured his second career pole position and his first on the oval with a fast lap of 160.052 mph. Kanaan's lap was the fastest of the weekend.
Max Papis (Miller Lite Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "It has been a frustrating weekend for our Miller Lite team. On Friday afternoon, we had a brake vibration and I really didn't get many laps with the car. Then, this morning, we had an engine problem and when we went to the backup car there was a mechanical problem. Actually, we had made some setup changes that felt better but we just got a few laps this morning. In qualifying, it was sprinkling pretty hard when I went out and I almost lost it when I went into turn three on my first lap. I was able to save it but it really messed up both laps. I don't know if I should have got another chance to make a qualifying lap since they stopped the session for 45 minutes to dry the track. But that is CART's decision. There is nothing I can do now. It just hasn't been good weekend for us. Now we'll have to come from the very back to score some points. We've had to work hard for our points most of the year coming from the back of the field on a couple of occasions."
Kenny Brack (Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola) - "We didn't run as fast as this morning. I don't know if the track was different or not. We just slowed down. It's hard to say what it was. Maybe the rain delay had something to do with it. It could have been a number of things like the rain, the track temperature or grip conditions. We had a good car in the morning but something made it change. We'll have to look at it in the garage and make the right adjustments for the race. I was hoping for a better qualifying spot but eighth isn't that bad. You can win the race from there. We just have to make the car better for Sunday. It's very difficult to pass in the race and you have to have a very good car. I think we are capable of getting the Shell car back up front again."
