Houston (October 1, 2000) -- Kenny Bräck, the most celebrated "rookie" to enter CART since F-1 champion Nigel Mansell in 1993, today clinched the Jim Trueman CART "Rookie of the Year" award with his 15th finish in the third Texaco/Havoline Grand Prix of Houston. Brack will receive $50,000 at the CART season-end banquet on Oct. 30 in Los Angeles.
Brack currently has scored 118 points to lead Oriol Servia by 58 points with two races remaining - Australia on Oct. 15 and California on Oct. 29 - in 2000 CART FedEx Championship Series. The Shell driver now ranks seventh in the overall FedEx points and has posted eight top-five finishes and qualified in the top-ten in 13 races this year. The 34-year-old Sweden native joins an elite group of drivers to have won the Jim Trueman Award including his team owner Bobby Rahal (1982), Arie Luyendyk (1985), Mansell (1993), Jacques Villeneuve (1994), Gil de Ferran (1995), Alex Zanardi (1996) and last year's winner Juan Montoya.
Brack was the first defending Indy 500 winner to come to the FedEx series as a "rookie" after joining Team Rahal last November to drive the Shell Ford Reynard. The 34-year-old Sweden native came to the CART FedEx Championship Series this year after winning the 1998 Indy Racing League point title and finishing second in 1999 driving for A. J. Foyt.
This was Bräck's 46th career Champ/Indy Car start Sunday, 18 with CART and 28 in the Indy Racing League. In his 28 IRL starts, Bräck recorded four victories won the 1998 IRL series and was second in the 1999 IRL series. Brack's best CART finish was second at Cleveland. He was also third at Nazareth and Road America. His best qualifying performance was second at Japan.
Brack joined the IRL series in March 23, 1997 at Phoenix, subbing for injured Davy Jones on the Galles team. In seven starts for Galles, he recorded two top-five finishes. In the Formula 3000 series, Kenny ran 26 races with four wins, five poles, 14 top-five finishes. He won the Barber Saab Series in the U.S. in 1993, winning six of the 12 races. He won the Renault Clio Scandinavian Championship in 1992 and captured the title in the 1986 Swedish Junior Formula Ford division. Bräck is the third Swedish driver to compete in the CART FedEx Championship Series. Other Swedes include Stefan Johansson (1992-1996 with a best finishes of third in Detroit in 1992, Vancouver in 1992 and 1993, Nazareth in 1995 ) and Fredrik Ekblom (1994-1996 with a best finish of 15th at Detroit in 1994).
