Toronto, Ont. (July 12, 2003) - It took until the last seconds for the one minute barrier to be broken in the Saturday morning Champ Car practice at the Molson Indy Toronto.
The drivers had struggled to get under the one minute mark, with a number of drivers trading times at the top near the 1:00.500 mark. A majority of the competitive field sat within a second of the quickest time for much of the session.
Bruno Junqueira, fastest in Friday's first qualifying session when he posted a lap of 59.486, had completed only 4 laps about half way through the practice session when he came out again and immediately set the fastest mark up to that point with a 1:00.436 lap.
Bourdais then beat his team-mate's time with a lap of 1:00.223, as drivers began to get quicker towards the end of the session when the track was at its fastest.
Patrick Carpentier then took his turn at the top, posting times of 1:00.167 and then 1:00.002, until Bourdais set his best mark as the session ended.
The competitiveness of the field remained through the close of the session with fourteen drivers sitting within 1.1 seconds of Carpentier's 1:00.002 mark in second position.
Third was Alex Tagliani at 1:00.073, fourth was Jimmy Vasser at 1:00.352 and Junqueira's 1:00.436 held up for 5th.
