Labonte in for Unser in IROC lineup

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Feb. 8, 1999) International Race of Champions president Jay Signore announced Tuesday that Bobby Labonte would replace Al Unser Jr., at Daytona International Speedway in the first race of IROC XXIII.

Unser will not be able to attend the race due to the sudden illness of his 12-year-old daughter Cody. The nature of the illness has not been determined and Unser is at his daughter's bedside.

"I wanted to be a part of the IROC series again," Labonte said, "but not like this.

"Of course, our hearts and prayers are with Al and his family."

This will be Labonte's second appearance in the IROC True Value Series. In 1997, Labonte substituted for the injured Robby Gordon at California Speedway.

Labonte started that event 10th, led 25 of 50 laps, and finished an impressive second to Mark Martin in Race 3 of the inaugural IROC event in Fontana, Calif.

It has been determined that Labonte will become a full time series driver in IROC XXIII, replacing Unser.
