Stay Up Front

CART Online (June 3, 1998) -- Andretti says that, more than at many venues, qualifying plays a major role at Detroit. "It is probably the most important qualifying session of the year because it's so challenging to pass on the street course, so you need to stay up front. If you don't your chances of winning the race become very slim. IMG [the promoter of the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix] has made a huge effort to improve the passing places for the track. I'm looking forward to driving the course. Hopefully, I'll be doing the passing there." The Raceway at Belle Isle was reconfigured during the off-season to include construction of a large straightaway between Turns 2 and 3, eliminating up to four turns from the previous layout and allowing for higher speeds and increased passing. The temporary street circuit has also been lengthened slightly, and now measures 2.36 miles, rather than the previous 2.1.
