Michael Andretti Visits CART Kids
August 21, 1998 -- Michael Andretti, the winningest driver in FedEx Championship Series history, will introduce a group of inner-city youth to the excitement of Champ Car racing Saturday, August 22, during "CART Kids Day with Michael Andretti" in Philadelphia, Pa.
Andretti (Kmart/Texaco/Havoline Swift Ford), whose 37 victories top the CART career list, will appear at Longstreth Elementary School, South 57th St. and Willows Ave., from 1 to 3:30 p.m. His audience will include nearly 300 children, members of the Philadelphia Police Athletic League and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Philadelphia.
Chris Miles, host of Inside CART on Fox Sports Net, will serve as master of ceremonies for the program, which will include photo opportunities, questions and answers with Andretti and an autograph session.
The program is another element of the "CART Kids" program which began this season and will continue into the 1999 FedEx Championship Series season.
"These inner-city appearances are an important step in CART bringing Champ Car racing and its stars to groups of people who may never otherwise have the opportunity to attend a race, or have contact with major sports personalities," said CART Director of Promotions Jeff Gooding. "We thank Michael and his staff for donating their time and efforts to make this event happen."
Andretti, son of racing legend Mario Andretti, is in his 15th season of FedEx Championship Series competition. He won the 1991 series championship behind a single-season record eight victories. In addition to being CART's all-time victory leader, he ranks second with 31 career pole positions and 12 career victories from the pole.
Andretti's 225 career starts rank him behind only Bobby Rahal (259) and Al Unser Jr. (251) on the CART career list. He is far and away CART's career leader in laps led, with 5,821 and has posted at least one victory in 11 of his 15 seasons in the series.
This season, Andretti stands fifth in the FedEx Championship Series points race, with 93 points. He won the season-opening race at Homestead Fla., and has subsequently added second-place finishes at St. Louis, Cleveland and Toronto. He is a three-time winner of the Molson Indy Vancouver, next event on the FedEx Championship Series schedule, slated for Sunday, Sept. 6.
