Alex Zanardi, driver of the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard, was critically injured in a late-race collision with Alex Tagliani during today's American Memorial (German 500) CART FedEx Championship Series event at the EuroSpeedway in Lausitz, Germany. As of 7:40 p.m. local time today, Zanardi was undergoing surgery at Marzahn Hospital in Berlin to repair extreme damage to his lower extremities. He lost both of his legs in the accident - one above the knee and one below the knee. He also has a possible broken pelvis. He is breathing on his own, and has no other apparent internal injuries.
