CART Celebrates 2001 FedEx Championship Series Season At Las Vegas Awards Banquet Tuesday Night
LAS VEGAS (November 6, 2001) - Repeat FedEx Championship Series champions Gil de Ferran and Marlboro Team Penske will be the featured guests Tuesday evening at The Venetian in Las Vegas as the CART community gathers for the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series Awards Celebration.
In a ceremony that will be hosted by Fox Sports' Chris Myers, de Ferran will pick up the Vanderbilt Cup and his second consecutive million-dollar paycheck for winning the 2001 FedEx Championship Series title. De Ferran extended Marlboro Team Penske's record total of CART titles to nine with this year's championship, and joins Rick Mears (1981-82), Bobby Rahal (1986-87), and Alex Zanardi (1997-98) as the only drivers to win consecutive CART championships. Owner Roger Penske, and the entire Marlboro Team Penske will also be honored.
In addition to the awarding of the Vanderbilt Cup, a host of other award winners will be celebrated on Tuesday night. PacWest Racing driver Scott Dixon will be presented with the 2001 Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year Awards. Also, American Honda and Honda Performance Development will be honored for its fourth Manufacturer's Championship, Reynard Motorsport will receive its seventh consecutive Constructor's Cup, and Champ Car drivers representing Brazil will be presented with their third straight Nation's Cup.
As was announced last week, Michael Andretti will receive the 2001 WorldCom Most Popular Driver Award, the Mo Nunn Racing #55 Hollywood Honda/Reynard driven by Tony Kanaan will be honored as the 2001 winner of the PPG Color & Design Award, the Simple Green CART Safety Team will be recognized by Simple Green for its excellence and safety, Marlboro Team Penske driver Helio Castroneves will receive a new Honda Motorcycle for winning the Honda Fast Lap Award, and the crew of Kenny Brack's #8 Shell Ford-Cosworth/Lola will be recognized for winning the 2001 Craftsman Pit Crew Challenge.
Townsend Bell will be recognized for his 2001 Dayton Indy Lights Championship, Hoover Orsi will be honored for his 2001 Toyota Atlantic Championship, and Nicolas Rondet will be recognized for winning the 2001 Barber Dodge Pro Series title. The winner of the second-annual Greg Moore Legacy Award will also be unveiled during the ceremony Tuesday night.
In addition to the award winners, ABC and ESPN will be acknowledged for their years of providing television coverage of CART events, Sisaundra Lewis will perform the song "Hero," late night television talk show host and Team Rahal co-owner David Letterman will provide a Top 10 list and past FedEx Championship Series champions Mears, Rahal, Emerson Fittipaldi, Michael Andretti, and Jimmy Vasser will be honored as well.
