Castroneves quickest in race trim at Phoenix

IndyCar’s evening session at PIR ended much as qualifying did: with Team Penske-Chevrolet driver Helio Castroneves at the top of the time sheets, and Chevy power locking Honda horses out of the Top 10.

Castroneves was just 0.0031sec faster than teammate Juan Montoya with a best lap speed of 186.293mph.

Ed Carpenter Racing again looked fast with third and seventh fastest for Josef Newgarden and Ed Carpenter, with Scott Dixon topping the Ganassi quartet with fourth fastest.

Aside from interloper Carpenter, fifth through 10th were the preserve of Penske and Ganassi drivers, with Simon Pagenaud followed by front-row starter Tony Kanaan, Max Chilton, Will Power and Charlie Kimball.

Ryan Hunter-Reay was fastest of the Honda-powered cars in 11th for Andretti Autosport, while James Hinchcliffe bounced back from his morning shunt with 12th in the Schmidt Peterson Motorsports-Honda.

Another man recovering from a shunt was Carlos Munoz, but he was a subdued 19th fastest, just behind rookie teammate Alexander Rossi.

Takuma Sato was unable to compete, as the AJ Foyt Racing team continued to repair his car. Like Hinchcliffe, Sato’s shunt required a replacement engine and gearbox for the #14 car.
