AFTER PROMISING START RAPHAEL MATOS QUALIFIES 18TH AT THE INAUGURAL INDY GRAND PRIX OF ALABAMA

BIRMINGHAM, AL (April 10, 2010) - Despite a promising start in the opening round of qualifying, Raphael Matos and the Luczo Dragon/de Ferran Motorsports Team slipped to a disappointing 18th in qualifying for the first ever Indy Grand Prix of Alabama at Barber Motorsports Park.

Matos looked strong in the first portion of his session, climbing into second on the primary black tires, but the steady start was derailed by surprisingly slower times when they made the switch to the alternate reds. When the dust settled they finished ninth in group two of the opening round. Will Power, Scott Dixon, Ryan Briscoe, EJ Viso, Takuma Sato and Justin Wilson were the six from the group to advance.

"The times looked promising on the black tires for the first part of the qualifying session," Matos said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't improve our times on the red tires as we expected. We need to understand why we couldn't find more speed and come up with a strategy tomorrow to come from behind as we have in the first two races."

Matos has proven adept at making climbs from low starting positions. In the last six IZOD IndyCar Series races he has started 12th or worse, Matos has made up an average of 8.2 positions combined. This season alone, he started 12th in Sao Paulo and finished fourth and improved 15 spots when he started 23rd and finished eighth in St. Petersburg.
