The Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires headed into the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course race weekend with Spencer Pigot and Scott Hargrove firmly on top fighting for the championship lead, but neither of them won a race and only one of them got a podium finish in the second race.
Race One
The weekend where the unexpected became commonplace began with Nicolas Costa winning the first race of the weekend for Team Pelfrey over Ryan Booth and Shelby Blackstock, while series points leader Pigot finished fourth for Juncos Racing and Hargrove could only manage seventh for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor RAcing.
The race had a restart with five laps to go, but under the caution, second-placed runner Kyle Kaiser slowed abruptly. Although he rejoined the field, he could not recover his position and finished 12th, a disappointment for Pigot’s teammate.
Race Two
Race two, on the other hand, was a different story. Costa started on pole but Andretti Autosport’s Garett Grist grabbed the lead early and held on to win his second race of the season over Costa with Hargrove finishing third and Pigot finishing sixth.
The heartbreak of the second race went to Shelby Blackstock, who was involved in an incident before the green flag came out and finished last, earning one point.
The series points lead narrowed ever so slightly from 17 to 14 points as Pigot leads Hargrove 259 to 245 with the Milwaukee Mile and Sonoma Raceway’s double header weekend remaining. Neil Alberico leads the battle for third over Blackstock and Grist with totals of 186 to 174 to 172, respectively. With three races to go, it is highly unlikely that anybody besides Hargrove and Pigot would win the title, but anything can happen.
