Ostella 10th in Mosport Home Run
September 3rd, 2010, Maple, Ontario, Canada - David Ostella completed the penultimate round of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear last weekend, a run that came in like a lion and went out like a lamb at Mosport International Raceway.
"The start of the race was awesome, a really good start that I'd say was by far one of the best I've ever had," Ostella said of his start Saturday afternoon that saw him improve almost immediately from eighth to seventh, and nearly get sixth. "But after five laps the car fell off really badly. It was loose in every corner and very hard to control. We just had the wrong setup for the race today."
After tailing Connor De Phillippi and Mikael Grenier early in the 45-minute race, Ostella became isolated in seventh working toward half distance and dropped just a single position in the second half while continuing to wrestle with his Star Mazda entry. Then, while looking set for eighth despite the handling woes, Ostella became a prime target late when two green flag laps followed a period of full-course caution.
"I had a good restart, but just couldn't hold the car through the corners," said the eighteen-year- old from Maple, Ontario. "The caution allowed others to close the gap, and when the green came out they were able to just draft by me or get me through the corners."
The final result was P10, a notable crossing considering the race that preceded it. In the lead-up to race day, Ostella said a misstep Thursday afternoon led to a total restart on Friday morning and he and the team were in catch-up mode afterward. After going a full second quicker from the first to second session on day one, they then lost that and more in session three to close opening day.
The time was recovered Friday morning as Ostella timed eighth, then new rubber in final practice led to over a half-second more as he turned his first laps in 1:16. Continuing the trend, Ostella then turned his best lap of the weekend in qualifying when he found another three tenths, good for ninth, and he started eighth on the grid after another car made tire changes and moved to the back. Though the race didn't deliver his hopes, the sophomore driver had little time to dwell in the paddock afterward.
"We had a lot of family and friends in the pits afterward and it was really good to see them all at the track," Ostella said following his home start. "They were thrilled with the race day, and were taking pictures and asking questions. It's fun to see and share their excitement and it's why racing at home is so special."
Ostella and the rest of the Star Mazda drivers now have a single race remaining, round thirteen which will begin September 29th at Road Atlanta. David will take part in the Petit Le Mans weekend thanks to continued support from Global Precast Intercontinental, Alpinestars, Masters Insurance, Pro Green Demoliton and RAW Integrated Ltd.
