Chennai MRF 1600: Aradhya fends off title contenders to win Race 2

Yash Aradhya won the penultimate race of the 2018 MRF F1600 season in Chennai after holding off championship contenders Goutham Parekh and Raghul Rangasamy in a nail biting finish.

Reverse grid pole sitter Aradhya was quick off the line, holding his lead into turn 1. Meanwhile, Parekh and Rangasamy started rising up the pack, jumping up to third and fourth respectively on the first lap alone.

Both the drivers then dispatched Nirmal Umashankar and set about chasing Aradhya. While Parekh managed to reach the tail of Aradhya in no time, Rangasamy simply wasn’t quick enough at this stage and settled a few seconds behind in third.

Halfway through the race Sandeep Kumar and Karminder Singh suffered a spectacular crash, bringing out the safety car.

The SC circulated for several minutes, before peeling into the pits and setting up a two-lap showdown for victory.

Aradhya, Parekh and Rangasamy quickly pulled away, engaging in a private three-way scrap. Rangasamy made several attempts to pass Parekh, who likewise tried to get ahead of Aradhya.

However, Aradhya managed to hold on to secure his second victory of the season, with Parekh also keeping Rangasamy at bay to secure second and take the championship fight into the final race.

Nirmal Umashankar finished three tenths ahead of Keith Desouza in fourth, with Ashwin Datta, who started the season with a triple win before suffering a slump in pace, classified sixth.

Bala Prasad and Arya Singh were next up in seventh and eighth positions respectively, while the top 10 was completed by Rupesh Sivakumar and Chetan Korada.
