Buddh MRF Challenge: Mawson extends lead in frantic second race

Joey Mawson dominated the second race of the MRF Challenge weekend at Buddh International Circuit to extend his lead in the Indian international championship.

The Australian started fifth and was involved in a frantic fight for the lead in the opening stages of the race, as reverse-grid polesitter Yoshiaki Katayama held up the pack behind.

The Japanese had German Kimi Schramm right on his tail, along with Mawson and Ralf Aron, who settled into a rhythm after losing ground at the start.

A mistake from Katayama gave Schramm the opportunity to take the lead momentarily, before Mawson launched himself to the front.

It was then just down to bringing it home for the reigning German F4 champion, who claimed his second win of the season by a clear margin of 8.805s.

Behind, Aron passed Schramm, as did Mick Schumacher and Harrison Newey, the latter duo having a battle of their own for the final podium spot.

In the end, Schumacher stayed in third with Newey in fourth and Schramm eventually finishing fifth.

Meanwhile, poleman Katayama dropped down to finish seventh, behind Rinus van Kalmthout.

It was a close battle between van Kalmthout, Katayama and eighth-placed Pedro Cardoso, the trio separated by a mere 0.878s over the line.

Manuel Maldonado and Chia Wing Hoong rounded off the Top 10 and were the last finishers after retirements for Dylan Young, Felipe Drugovich and Pavan Ravishanker - the latter two colliding on Lap 1.

UPDATE: Schramm was handed 20-second time penalty for a jump start, dropping him to ninth behind Maldonado.
