Chennai III Suzuki Gixxer: Vidhuraj bags title with podium in final round
Andhra Pradesh-based Meka Vidhuraj has emerged as the champion in the Open class of Suzuki Gixxer Cup after taking a podium finish in the final round of the season in Chennai.
Starting from a lowly sixth on the grid in Race 1, Vidhuraj steadily made his way up the pack, eventually finishing third in the six-lap sprint.
The 15 points scored secured him the title with one race to spare.
However, the real star of the day was Sri Lankan teen Aaron Gunawardene, who added another victory to his tally after starting from fourth on the grid.
R Rajnikanth finished nearly three seconds behind in second, while polesitter Vivian Gladwin had to be content with fourth after running wide at the start of the race.
Meanwhile, in the Novice category, Joseph Mathew took a dominant 11-second win over Vishal S and Alexander AS.
Gunawardene replicates victory in Race 2
Gunawardene took another victory in Race 2 after overcoming a stern challenge from Rajnikanth, the duo separated by less than a tenth of a second after the chequered flag drew on lap 6.
Meanwhile, Gladwin made amends for his Race 1 error by securing a well-earned podium finish, while, with championship in his bag, Vidhuraj cruised to fourth scoring a total of 170 points.
The novice category also saw a double winner with champion Mathew triumphing again in Race 2, with Amarnath Rajan and Alexander joining the Chennai-born driver on the podium.
