Chennai III Honda CBR 250: Kumar crowned champion in finale

Mathana Kumar has been crowned the 2016 Honda CBR 250 champion after picking up two second-place finishes in the final round of the season in Chennai.

Having won four races during the first three-quarters of the season, Kumar didn’t have to go all out for victory during the season’s delayed final round at the Madras Motor Race Track.

In the opening race, the Ten 10 Racing rider settled for second place behind ARRC regular and polesitter Hari Krishnan, securing the title with one race to go.

Kumar, though, had a battle in his hands with Pro Lap's Ananth Raj, who finished only 0.570s behind in third to complete the podium.

The 300-400cc category champion and Rockstar Racing's Ami van Poederooijen was fourth on the road with Apex Racing's Kishoare VS finishing fifth, ahead of Rajiv Sethu.

In the Novice 150cc category, Piyush Ranjan took double win in the first two races on Friday and Saturday respectively.

Krishnan doubles up in Race 2

Krishnan’s experience from competing at international level was further evident in Race 2 as he breezed to another victory at home turf.

Kumar was again second while Raj’s third place finish ensured a repeat of Race 1 podium. Kumar scored a total of 186.5 points in the title-winning season.

Behind the leading trio, Kishoare came a distant fourth, while B Aravind completed the top five.

Meanwhile, Sethu, who recently tested a Moto3-spec Honda bike, could fare no better than seventh finishing behind van Poederooijen.

Over in the 150cc category, Ranjan made it three wins in a row, but it was not enough for the Patna-born rider as Anish Shetty took the championship scoring 188 points.
