The 54th Rolex 24 at Daytona is underway!

Under blue skies but with a touch of humidity over Daytona International Speedway, IMSA's premier event was green flagged by the legendary AJ Foyt who won this race in 1983 and ’85.

Pipo Derani took the lead from the start of the race, pushing the ESM Ligier past polesitter Mikhail Aleshin in the SMP Racing BR01.

Also edging Aleshin was the Mike Shank Racing Ligier piloted by Ozz Negri, while Ricky Taylor was heading the DPs in fourth and applying pressure to Aleshin.

However, Katherine Legge then sent the DeltaWing into third, chasing the Ligier-Hondas.

In GTLM, Nick Tandy led a Porsche 1-2, with the RLLR BMW M6s in third and fourth, initially. However, the Bimmers then fell back, allowing the Corvette C7.R of Oliver Gavin into third in class, with Joey Hand's Ford GT in fourth.

Sadly, Ryan Briscoe had to bring the second Ford GT to the pits with electrical issues, stuck in sixth gear.

Stephen Simpson headed PC in the JDC Miller Oreca, while the No. 23 Alex Job Racing Porsche, piloted by Mario Farnbacher, has the early GTD lead.

First yellow flew 22mins in, as Tom Long's Mazda expired on track with transmission issues.

Track temperatures are reportedly much hotter than at any point this year, which could turn slick tire choice into a lottery.
