After falling to second behind Action Express teammate Filipe Albuquerque in the #5 Cadillac, Eric Curran’s race fortunes took a major hit when his #31 Caddy thumped the #22 ESM Nissan up the backside in the final turn.
The ESM car, driven by Johannes van Overbeek, appeared to be heading for the pits, and the sudden slowing caught out Curran. The result was two spun cars, the Nissan restarting under its own steam, the Cadillac needing a tow to the pits and behind the wall, losing three laps.
Following the full-course caution, Albuquerque resumed in front with Chris Miller in the #85 PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports Oreca, ahead of Alex Lynn in the Wayne Taylor Racing Cadillac, which took a nose change in this hour.
Spencer Pigot was now fourth in the #55 Mazda that suffered a puncture at the start of the race, with the recovering van Overbeek in fifth and Buemi in the much-delayed Rebellion Oreca, albeit two laps down.
At the close of the third hour, Pigot went behind the wall with a sick Mazda RT24-P.
GT Le Mans
Richard Westbrook in the #67 Ford GT led the class, chased by Bill Auberlen in the BMW M6, while Jan Magnussen in the #3 Corvette had his team jump him ahead of long-time class leading #66 Ford GT, with Sebastien Bourdais at the wheel.
The Risi Ferrari 488, in James Calado’s hands, also got ahead of the #66 to claim fourth.
The third Ford of Billy Johnson lay sixth ahead of the Porsche 911 RSRs in seventh and eighth, driven by Frederic Makowiecki and Laurens Vanthoor.
GT Daytona
Jeroen Bleekemolen led in the #33 Riley Motorsports Mercedes AMG GT3 ahead of Andy Lally’s Michael Shank Racing Acura NSX, Christopher Mies in the Land-Motorsport Audi R8, Matteo Cressoni in the Scuderia Corsa Ferrari 488 and Richard Antinucci in the Grasser Lamborghini.
The charge of the #75 Mercedes has been halted as Boris Said took the wheel, spun while offline being lapped by a GTLM BMW M6, and then got a drive-through penalty for punting a Lamborghini into a spin at Turn 17.
As a result, the car has fallen from seventh to 16th in class.
Prototype Challenge is currently led by Kyle Masson in the Performance Tech car, ahead of Max Hanratty’s Starworks entry.
