Jan Magnussen: Looking forward to the next 100 wins
The drive for 200 kicks off this weekend for Corvette Racing at Road America, as we managed to score our 100th win and 60th 1-2 finish at the last race at Lime Rock Park.
The thought of going 1-2 seemed pretty remote before the green flag, but like many of the 100 wins for Corvette Racing, it all came down to execution. We didn’t necessarily have the fastest car, we just did everything right.
Our only headache for the No.3 car was a drive-through penalty from a stray wheel that wandered out of the pit box on our first stop.
Not that I can complain – those guys on our crew have won so many races for us over the years.
Could it have made a difference at the flag? Hard to say – but the end result with a 1-2 for the team was just brilliant.
Road America is a great place to kick off our charge for the next 100 wins. This is a venue where we have tested a lot in the past and it is also the track where I first really annoyed Doug Fehan!
Elkhart Lake was where I won by first GT race in a Ferrari back in 2003 with David Brabham. I managed to sneak past my ex-Panoz team mate and future Corvette Racing team mate Johnny O’Connell on the final lap to take the win.
Doug obviously didn’t want it to happen again – so instead he signed me up for 2004. The was the first of what has been an amazing 12 years which has resulted in 31 victories in yellow.
A remarkable story
When you look at what Corvette Racing has achieved in sportscar racing, the results are quite remarkable.
Many awesome teams have had periods of domination in sportscar racing in the US – teams like Dyson, Flying Lizard, Highcroft, Muscle Milk, Prodrive, Panoz, Champion, Penske, Alex Job and Audi have all had amazing stints but I’m proud to have been a part of Corvette Racing’s incredible run of 16 years of success.
For Antonio Garcia and myself, we’re really looking forward to this weekend. We’ve finished third and second in the past two races so a win is the next thing on our “to do” list.
Road America is certainly one of my favorite tracks. Many guys describe it as being a lot like Spa in Europe.
The Carousel and the Kink are two brilliant corners which are just fantastic when the car is working well. However, on the downside, if the car isn’t working well, that part of the track is incredibly difficult.
Winning at home
I’m heading back to the US this weekend after an awesome race weekend at home with the Copenhagen street race.
We had great pace in our Magnussen Racing Experience Camaro in the Danish Thundersports Championship but luck wasn’t on our side. I finished second in the first race in the pouring rain but got pushed into the wall in Race 2 and damaged a wheel.
I was really looking forward to a great run in the third race but we broke a throttle cable which put us out.
It was a disappointing end – especially considering we were leading the championship before the weekend kicked off.
I’m now second but I’m going to have to miss the next weekend as I have a clashing race for Corvette Racing at VIR.
But on the positive side we managed to raise a lot of money for the local children’s hospital and Red Cross by taking part in the ride sessions at the track. Corvette Racing gave me a C7 road car to take people for laps – wow that car is fast!
