Multimatic Ford Mustang driver Billy Johnson set to join Ganassi's all-star Ford GT lineup
Following our reveal of the majority of the Ganassi Ford GT driver lineup yesterday, Motorsport.com believes the fourth full-time driver will be Billy Johnson.
That would mean the 29-year-old would graduate from racing the Multimatic Motorsports-run Ford Mustangs in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge to join Richard Westbrook, Ryan Briscoe and Joey Hand. Multimatic also build the Ford GTs.
Johnson and co-driver Scott Maxwell finished third in CTSCC championship this season, scoring a win at Lime Rock. That was Johnson’s 15th win from his four years in the series.
Ford Performance director Dave Pericak would not be drawn on the lineup, which will be confirmed at next weekend’s NASCAR season finale, the Ford EcoBoost 400.
However, he admitted he was pleased with the GT’s progress in testing. He told Motorsport.com: “Everything’s going great, everything’s going to plan. January’s rapidly approaching but we’re excited.
Regarding Ford’s return to the 24 Hours of Le Mans on the 50th anniversary of the marque’s first win there with the GT40, he added: “We’re very confident. I’d say we’re somewhat ahead of target as far as durability goes.
“Now it’s just a matter of getting it tuned in and getting our drivers ready to run.”
