Cameron, Curran earn first win of the season at CTMP
The No. 31 Action Express Corvette DP of Dane Cameron and Eric Curran have won their first race of the year at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park.
Action Express have finished 1-2 for the second consecutive race, but this time, it's the No. 31 taking the checkered flag from the No. 5. Wayne Taylor Racing took the final position on the podium with the No. 90 VisitFlorida team rounding out a quartet of Corvette DPs at the front. The No. 70 Mazda came home fifth, also on the lead lap.
The race started with Ricky Taylor taking the early lead from Tristan Nunez. Wayne Taylor Racing's time out front was short-lived however with the Mazda using GT traffic to get by and check out.
The first incident of the race took place entering the front stretch when Michael Shank Racing's John Pew got into the No. 88 Starworks PC, causing them both to spin. They recovered without the need of a FCY.
Nunez amassed a 25-second lead before the first round of green-flag pit stops.
And that's when it all went wrong. The air jack was not functioning, causing a lengthy stop. Jonathon Bomarito was now at the wheel of the No. 55 and upon exiting the pits, he immediately fell under attack. The Action Express teammates split him in a bold move.
The Mazda was scored back in fifth once pit stops cycled through and unfortunately, they would not see the checkered flag. With 80 minutes left in the race, Bomarito stopped on track due to a right rear hub failure.
The No. 31 was able to maintain its advantage over the field through the final set of stops and was able to cruise to the victory. Coming to the white flag, the third and final full-course caution came out to retrieve Andy Lally, who had crashed the No. 44 Magnus Racing Audi into a tire barrier. That incident was preceded by the DeltaWing making contact with the barriers in a separate incident. Sean Rayhall was at the wheel and able to limp the damaged car back to the pits, finishing 13th overall and seventh in class.
In PC, the No. 85 JDC-Miller team looked to be in good shape and in firm control of the race until their final stop, which saw them drop back and opened the door for CORE Autosport to take the win with Colin Braun and Jon Bennett.
