Bentley to test prototype ahead of future LMP2 entry

Bentley is set to return to prototype sportscar racing within the next two years with an LMP2 programme. can reveal that a test car - a Ginetta LMP3 chassis, mated to a twin-turbo Bentley engine - is set to run next month.

The test mule is currently being readied at Ginetta's UK base and has been worked on since November.

The first run is to be scheduled for the end of February, according to sources.

After the test programme is complete, Bentley would then need to pick between Dallara, ORECA, Onroak (Ligier) and Riley/Multimatic chassis when the new LMP2 regulations come into effect for 2017.

The manufacturer, whose car will only run initially in the US, is likely to enter as a full works team and compete in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship in America.

Bentley has been active in GT racing in the past two years, but its last prototype involvement dates back to the previous decade, with the successful V8-powered Speed 8 that won the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2003.
