Braselton, GA., April 20: It doesn't get any closer. David Tenney in the #10 Toyota powered World Sports Racer, and Mike Davies in the #83 car, finished one and two, separated by .001 seconds. And, as any fan that was holding their breath waiting for the conclusion of this race could tell you, it was even closer than that, but the clocks won't measure less than .001!
Per Tenney, Davies got a run on him coming up the back straight. Dave went a little wide in the bridge turn, so they were nearly side by side through turn twelve. At the flag, it was Tenney by inches! "We've been racing together for 11 years so I knew we would give each other room. I'm just glad I made it in front of him," said the winner, Tenney.
Tenney also had the fastest lap of the race at 1:30.511, or roughly 100mph.
Your humble correspondent, one of two drivers for the RIOBI Racing team, had a similar experience through the bridge turn complex, but unlike the race's winner, came out on the short end. Gary Tiller in the #5 car got a run on me in the #6 car coming up the back straight, we went side by side through the bridge turn, but Gary carried better momentum than me, and I lost 8th place by a car's length.
The Black Magic Pro series for Toyota powered World Sports Racers, running under Sportscar's sanction, is turning out to provide every bit of the close racing that was anticipated of this spec series. First and second, and eighth and ninth were decided at the last turn, but everything in between was nose to tail.
In two separate incidents, two cars went off in turn one during the race, bringing out two fairly extended full course yellow flags. In both cases, the drivers were unhurt, but Sportcar's race management wisely decided to remove the cars before returning to green flag racing.
The next race for Sportscar's Black Magic Pro series for World Sports Racers will be at Watkins Glen (NY) on June 1, 1997. We at RIOBI hope to see you there.
