PORSCHE TEAM WINS 24 HOURS OF DAYTONA

RENO, NEVADA, February 6, 1995 --- A Porsche 962 Spyder fielded by Germany's Kremer Racing and co-driven by Germans Jurgen Lassig and Marco Werner, Christophe Bouchet of France and Giovanni Lavaggi of Italy, captured the 1995 edition of the Rolex 24 at Daytona IMSA sports car race on Sunday, Feb. 5. The winning car averaged 102.289 miles per hour for the 24-hour race distance and finished more than five laps ahead of the runner-up entry, an Oldsmobile Spice. It marked a record 19th overall victory by a Porsche-powered car in the Daytona 24 Hour race, and the sixth triumph in the event by a Porsche 962.

Competing in the LeMans World Sports Car (WSC) Class for turbocharged open-cockpit prototype cars, the Kremer entry was forced to adhere to new rules imposed for the category just 10 days prior to the event which severely reduced its horsepower. As a result, it qualified for the contest in 17th position, nearly 10 seconds a lap slower than the pole-winning Ferrari, and was running as many as 11 laps behind the leaders at the 10-hour mark. It took the top spot for good in the 15th hour of the race after all four of the Ferrari WSC cars had encountered mechanical trouble.

Two other Porsche entries recorded top-five finishes in the event. The Rohr Motorsport Porsche 911 Turbo co-driven by Hurley Haywood, David Murry, Jochen Rohr and Bernd Maylaender placed fourth overall and second in the GTS-1 Class, while a Porsche 911 piloted by Lilian Bryner, Enzo Calderari, Renato Mastropietro and Ulrich Richter placed fifth overall and first in the GTS-2 Class.

The ESPN cable sports network will televise portions of the 1995 Daytona 24 Hour race on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 9:30 pm to 11:00 pm EST.
