BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada -- Ron Fellows of Oakville, Ontario and Rob Morgan of Conway, Ark.. did something Sunday no other drivers had been able to do since September, 1964 -- drive a Ferrari to victory at Mosport.
Fellows who had put the Axciom Ferrari 333SP on the pole Friday, built a strong lead early in the two-hour Exxon World SportsCar championship race before turning the car over to team-mate Rob Morgan. It appeared that Fellows and Morgan would have to settle for second place but the MOMO Ferrari of Fermin Velez ran out of fuel with just three laps remaining, giving the race to Fellows and Morgan.
It was Fellows' first start in the Exxon World SportsCar Championship and is his second victory in two weeks. Last Sunday, Fellows won a Craftsman Truck race at Watkins Glen, N.Y.
The Ford R&S MK III of James Weaver and defending champion Butch Leitzinger finished second, followed by the Oldsmobile R&S MK III of Wayne Taylor and Eric van de Poele.
Series points leader Elliott Forbes-Robinson fell out of the race near the halfway point, but still leads James Weaver by five points as the series moves to Las Vegas Motor Speedway, for a September 20th race under the lights.
More than 30,000 fans were at Mosport Sunday, taking the four-day total for the Mosport Festival to an estimated 100,000.
