Mattco Racing Looks To Continue Successful Streak
Bowmanville, Ontario, Canada; August 22, 1997: Pete Halsmer, driver of the No. 77 Alco Capital Group BMW M3, vies for his second consecutive win at the Mosport Festival and Mattco Racing aims to collect its third podium finish in as many races when the Exxon Supreme GT Series Presented by Virgin Interactive travels to Mosport on August 30. The 1 hour and 45 minute race for the GTS-1, 2 and 3 classes is round seven of the 11-race Professional SportsCar Racing (SportsCar) schedule.
Mattco Racing, in its first season of SportsCar GT competition, is coming off two straight top-2 finishes: a first at Watkins Glen and a second at Sears Point, giving the team a bit of an advantage, a little extra momentum, heading into SportsCar's only appearance in Canada. "I've been coming to Mosport for a lot of years, " recalls Halsmer, 53, of Bloomfield, Mich., "but it's always best when you come back to a track where you've won the previous year. That, combined with a win and a second in our last two races, certainly makes it a nice feeling to come to Mosport in that kind of a situation and I think it gets the whole team a little more pumped up.
Success tends to create a desire for more success, particularly with a new team like this one. And the very enthusiastic Canadian race fans always make it enjoyable to race here, too." Team owner/driver Matt Cohen will join Halsmer behind the wheel of the No. 77 Alco Capital Group BMW M3 this weekend, his second appearance at Mosport Park. "Last year's race was my first visit to Mosport," says Cohen, 25, of New York City, "but the second time around is like night and day from the first. This time I can focus my efforts on improving my lap times and setting up the car and not be distracted by having to learn the track from scratch. I'm very pleased with how well this whole program has come together and everyone on the team deserves a lot of credit for what we've accomplished in a relatively short period of time. We've been on a bit of a roll lately and nothing would be better than to win our first race north of the border."
The Exxon Supreme GT race airs live on TNN at 1:00 p.m. EDT.
