INSPIRE MOTORSPORTS TAKES FRONT ROW AT LIME ROCK
LAKEVILLE, CONNECTICUT (JULY 24, 2010) -- Friday's rain turned into Saturday's sunshine for Gary Gibson, as he took his #13 Inspire Motorsports/Perfect Pedal DP02 to the top of the Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship starting grid in the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park. Gibson's teammate, Championship leader #21 Charlie Shears (Inspire Motorsports/US Builders) starts alongside.
The Lites 1 track record of 54.399 was not threatened on a warm and very humid morning, but records weren't on Gibson's mind. Earlier in the week, he had spoken about Lime Rock being the place his season turned around in 2009, and he hopes the same is true this year. His second pole position in as many races is a good place to start.
"I've always said that the series I want to race in has the first session as qualifying and the second session is the race," said Gibson. "I always hit the track running well and then everyone catches up to me by the race! So I got my wish and it worked out.
"The guys did a great job and gave me a great car. This is two in a row for pole and I'd like to keep that going. This year has not been going well - I haven't had good luck, but hopefully we have turned the corner this year. We are going to three tracks I love after this so I'm looking forward to the rest of the year."
Shears does not envy his teammate's starting position - but he definitely has plans for the finishing spot.
"I'd hate to be the polesitter going into this race with this heat for 45 minutes!" said Shears. "Not having practiced in the dry affected us this morning, but everyone is starting at the same spot. This is our fourth year racing here - two years ago we started last and made it to third, and we finished second last year. I couldn't catch up with Gary! Hopefully this year it's going to be a different story."
Rounding out the top five is #8 Anthony Nicolosi (Performance Tech/Medical Connections), #54 Jonathan Bennett (Inspire Motorsports/Composite Resources) and #4 Antonio Downs (Eurosport Racing/Lamex Foods). On pole for the Lites 2 division is #75 John Weisberg (BERG Racing/Redcom).
The 45-minute Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship race will see the green flag at 12:05 pm.
The Cooper Tires Prototype Lites Championship features racing between two sports racer prototype classes, Lites 1 and Lites 2, presenting a dimension of competition as drivers must be aware of classes with distinctly different speeds as they navigate the race track. This is the same challenge faced by the drivers of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patrón.
The Championship continues on August 20-22, with Rounds 10 and 11 held in conjunction with the 2010 Road America Showcase in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.
