SEBRING, Fl (March 17, 2011) – Daniel Goldburg took his first Cooper Tires Prototype Lites pole position in Lites 1 while Toronto’s Robert Sabato continued to pace the Lites 2 field, earning his third pole for Round One, ahead of the 59th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.

Goldburg, driving the #6 Élan DP02 for Performance Tech ran the last two races of the year at Road Atlanta to learn the cars ahead of his first full season with the series. Clearly, the Delray Beach, Florida resident is a quick study.

“I had some traffic in front of me when I started the session but I was able to get past them,” said Goldburg. “I did a good lap and my next one was the pole lap. I came in and kept my eye on the competition to make sure we kept it. And we did. I’ve been working with Performance Tech for a year, working up to this – they’ve given me a great car, great coaches and I’m really happy to be here.”

Lucas Downs (#79 Eurosport Racing/Members Mark Chicken Breast) and Gerry Kraut (#55 JDC Motorsports/ Dougherty and Co.) round out the top three in Lites 1.

Sabato, a veteran of the series, had planned to save his tires and try to get a good lap early. Leading the Lites 2 speed charts for most of the week, Sabato worked the plan to perfection, staying ahead of Lee Alexander (#23 Factory 48 Motorsports) and Jim Garrett (#42 West Racing/Speed Promo).

“We had decided to try to save the tires and get a quick lap early, which I was able to do,” said Sabato, driving the #22 6th Gear Racing West WR1000. “But the car started getting sloppy, even after four laps, so I went in, got my composure and figured I’d go back out if I had to. It turned out I didn’t have to – and I was thankful.”

The Prototype Lites mission is two-fold: present an opportunity for semi-professional race car drivers to compete in a world-class environment while also providing an avenue for drivers to move up the ladder into the LMPC or LMP classes in the American Le Mans Series Presented by Tequila Patrón. The series is divided into two classes: Lites 1, featuring the Élan DP02 chassis, powered by a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder Mazda MP2 engine; and Lites 2, utilizing the West WX10 and WR1000 chassis, with either a Kawasaki ZX10R or a Suzuki GSXR motor.
