Broken Suspension Knocks out Mishael Abbott at Sebring
SEBRING, FL (March 16, 2007) -- Race 2 at Sebring International Raceway didn't go as Mishael Abbott had hoped. A broken suspension took Mishael out of the race on the first lap, making the rest of the 2007 IMSA Lites Presented by Hankook season an uphill battle for her in the IMSA Lites 1 Championship.
Mishael Abbott stepped up to fifth on the starting grid in her B-K Motorsports, Mazda powered, Elan DP02 when the car that was to start in front of her didn't make it to the pre-race lineup. Afternoon rains delayed the race schedule about an hour and left a wet track for the start. Although the rain had stopped, all competitors started on rain tires for the 30-minute race.
The race began under standing yellow-flag conditions for the first three laps. Heading into turn 7 during the first lap on the 3.7-mile road course at Sebring, Mishael felt something and then realized her left front suspension had collapsed. She spun and stopped in the middle of the turn, almost taking out the car behind her. She got the car re-fired but just pulled it off the track, ending her day early. The culprit was a sheared-off bolt in the lower front suspension.
"It was just one of those things that happens in racing," said Mishael Abbott. "I really think that if I could have been out there running, (teammate) Gerardo (Bonilla) and I could have been on the podium together."
Mishael officially finished eleventh in Friday's race placing her fourth in the standings for the IMSA Lites 1 Championship. It was a mixed day for B-K Motorsports. Gerardo Bonilla won for the second day in a row but Kurt Roehrig was involved in a crash on lap 6 and finished tenth.
"I am looking forward to testing and working with the B-K Motorsports team this season," Mishael said. "We have a great team and will be tough to beat in the next two races in Utah."
Rounds 3 and 4 of the 2007 IMSA Lites Presented by Hankook (www.imsaracing.net) is scheduled for May 18 and 19, 2007 at Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele, Utah for the Utah Grand Prix.
