GIBSON WINS FIRST IMSA LITES RACE; FEINBERG CLOSES IN ON CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS LEADER
Lakeville, Conn. July 18 -- Joel Feinberg won his third race of the 2009 IMSA Lites presented by Frisby Performance Tire series in round seven at Lime Rock Park. Feinberg started third and worked his way up to the top step on the podium with consistent driving while those in front of him, including round eight winner Gary Gibson, made small mistakes.
After Gibson's run in with the turn one curbing in the Saturday morning race he didn't put a wheel wrong to cruise to his first IMSA Lites victory.
"I learned from race one to stay on the paved part," Gibson said. "On the restart I just put my head down and did the fastest lap I've done all weekend. I knew if I could get a gap then I'd be okay."
Gibson won by over two seconds in the 30-minute sprint race that saw a lot of action, including the misfortune of pole setter Jonathan Gore, when the top four encountered lapped traffic. In round seven Gore had the fastest lap of the race while making his way from 13th to third.
Charlie Shears, who has missed the last four rounds of the IMSA Lites series, showed he hasn't forgotten much finishing second in round eight. "It's nice being back in the car," Shears said. "Second is a good way to come back."
The racing in the Lites Two category was no less exciting with Berg Racing teammates Michael Hill and John Weisberg each bringing home a first place. In round eight Weisberg avoided a turn one incident that took his teammate out of the running to win his fourth race of the season.
"The start was interesting," Weisberg explained. "We went into turn one and Michael was right behind me. Four L1 cars went in right in front of us and made contact."
KC Racing's Kelly Toombs and Chris Funk were back at Lime Rock Park in the Lites Three class. Toombs won both rounds at the Lakeville, Conn. track.
Lites One championship points leader Matt Downs finished second in round seven, letting Feinberg only gain two points on him in the championship. However, in round eight Downs fell back to eighth place, his worst finish of the year, allowing Feinberg to close to within three points of him.
The championship battle continues August 14-16 at rounds nine and ten of the IMSA Lites presented by Frisby Performance Tire at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisc.
