Gerardo Bonilla Wins 2007 IMSA Lites Championship
Monterey, CA. Oct. 29, '07 -- Gerardo Bonilla clinched the 2007 IMSA Lites Series driving an Elan DP-02 sports racer with the B-K Motorsports racing team. Bonilla finshed 2nd in the weekend's first race Sunday morning and won the day's second and final race of the season ahead of local hot shoe Matt Downs and second in points Jay Cochran.
Bonilla's weekend was not without adversity. A busy schedule the previous two weeks, with a six-day race week at Road Atlanta followed back-to-back by shop prep and test days at VIR, made for long nights for the B-K Motorsports crew. "If it wasn't for my guys, Thomas, Andrew, Scott, Clint, Silas, and the extended team members like Buzz, Bob, Nate and many others who normally manage the team's LMP2 car, there's no way I could have a car to win the championship, much less win a few races. I sincerely appreciate what my crew, Mazda and Robert Bach have done for me this year," Bonilla said of his team.
Bonilla's season was marked with seven wins in twelve starts, beginning with double-wins at his home track, Sebring International Raceway. Bonilla continued on with wins at Miller Motorsports Park, Lime Rock Park, Mosport International Raceway, then at the final weekend at Mazda Raceway at Laguna Seca. "The pressures of trying to win a championship are easier if you've done it before. The Skip Barber National Series gave me that confidence and experience in 2005. I can't thank that organization enough," related Bonilla.
In recent weeks Bonilla also drive a Pontiac GTO for Autosport Development, a SPEED World Challenge GT team at the Road Atlanta round in early October. In that event Bonilla started 18th and finished 8th in a rain soaked drive through the field. Bonilla was also invited to a test with Indy Pro Series champions Sam Schmidt Motorsports in one of their Dallara racecars.
Plans are being finalized for Bonilla's 2008 racing season. "This year was very special, but somehow, I have a feeling 2008 is going to be the best yet. It just proves that hard work will always be rewarded. We'll keep pushing," said Bonilla as the season came to a close.
