The Dodge Dealers Grand Prix Presented By The Connecticut Lottery Has The Best Of Both World On Memorial Day Weekend SCCA And SportsCar Series Headed For Lime Rock Park
LAKEVILLE, Conn. - There always has been something special about Memorial Day weekend at Lime Rock Park. That tradition will be upheld again in 1997. For the third consecutive year, Lime Rock Park in northwestern Connecticut will hold a truly unique event. The Dodge Dealers Grand Prix presented by the Connecticut Lottery on May 23-26 is the only co-sanctioned event by Sports Car Club of America Pro Racing (SCCA) and SportsCar this season. The SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Championship and SportsCar's Exxon World SportsCar Championship will headline the "Largest Sports Car Race Weekend in North America." Joining the two premier road racing series in America are the Barber Dodge Pro Series, the Exxon Supreme GT Series presented by Virgin Interactive, the SCCA World Challenge Championship and the PPG Neon Challenge Series. It all adds up to more than 150 of the world's fastest sports cars competing in seven races over Memorial Day weekend. All the top drivers from the Exxon World Sports Car and Trans-Am championships are expected to be at The Dodge Dealers Grand Prix presented by the Connecticut Lottery. The World SportsCar contingent will be led by defending series champion Wayne Taylor in the Doyle Racing Riley & Scott MK III. Gianpiero Moretti's MOMO Ferrari 333 SP, Dyson Racing's James Weaver and Butch Leitzinger, who captured the WSC victory at Road Atlanta, and the Screaming Eagles team of Dan Clark and Craig T. Nelson of the ABC-TV series "Coach" also will be competing at Lime Rock. The Trans-Am lineup will include the three-time and defending series champion Tommy Kendall, two-time defending race winner Dorsey Schroeder, Trans-Am rookie Mike Borkowski of Middlebury, Greg Pickett and Paul Gentilozzi. The four-day weekend begins on Friday, May 23 with practice for all six series and the first qualifying session for the Barber Dodge Pro Series. Saturday is mainly devoted to qualifying, but there also are two races. The SCCA World Challenge Championship will run a 60-minute feature and the PPG Neon Challenge Series will compete in a 20-lap race. On Sunday, Lime Rock is turned over to the Mopar Expo '97 Auto Show & Swap Meet, one of the largest Mopar car shows in the Northeast. The racing action starts at 10 a.m. Monday when the PPG Neon Challenge Series hits the track for the first of five races. The 66-lap Trans-Am race is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. and will be followed by the 1-hour, 45-minute WSC feature. Entrance gates open at 7:30 a.m. on all four days. Lime Rock fans also will have an opportunity to win a brand new 1997 Dodge Neon Sport courtesy of the New Dodge and the Connecticut Lottery. Race fans can sign up to win the car at The Dodge Dealers Grand Prix presented by the Connecticut Lottery. The winner of the Dodge Neon Sport will be announced at Lime Rock on Memorial Day, May 26.
