PTG BMW M3 NOTES AND QUOTES Exxon Supreme GT Series -- GTS-3 SportsCar Grand Prix Presented by FAO Schwarz Friday, Sept. 19, 1997

FOLLOWING QUALIFYING SESSION: The PTG BMW M3s qualified second (No. 10 Yokohama Four Door), third (No. 6 Yokohama coupe), fourth (No. 7 Red Bull/Fina/Yokohama coupe), and fifth (No. 5 Conoco/Interstate Batteries/Budget Car Rental four door). Bill Auberlen drove No. 10, Derek Hill No. 6, Marc Duez No. 7, and Boris Said No. 5. David Murry in the No. 39 Porsche captured the pole.

AUBERLEN (No. 10 M3 four door): DID YOU DRIVE YOUR HEART OUT TO GET THE POLE? "Actually I tried harder than normal. I just beat up little Brian Krem's (team engine builder) motor to pieces (not really, the engine is fine). I used every little bit I had. You have got to give it to Porsche. They have come up with something that works here really well. They come off the slow speed turns incredibly well and whatever motor configuration they have carries the speed so well down the straightaway, it's ama zing. They have done a great job. I say put lead on them, that's the answer to everything. I took it as hard as we can take that BMW engine. Maybe this is the place where the Porsche will shine. But we still have to outrace them. Late in the qualify ing session he (David Murry in the No. 39 Porsche) passed me and he ran away a little bit, then he started to come back to me. Maybe their car will deteriorate as the race goes on."

BORIS SAID, qualified the No. 5 Conoco/Interstate Batteries/Budget Car Rental four door in fifth: WERE YOU GOING FOR THE POLE? "No. We didn't quite have the right gearing in the new car. Originally I went out to help (Marc) Duez draft better. I ran a few laps trying to help him. I just worked on trying to learn the track better for the race. I wasn't trying to run crazy and run any fast times. To beat the Porsche in the race we will have to drive a perfect race. Hopefully the race will run green all the way, and they will wear down their tires."
