Daytona Beach, Fla. (23 January 2015) – Kyle Gimple drove to a top-10 finish at the famous Daytona International Speedway on Friday as he and Compass360 Racing co-driver Paul Holton took seventh in the BMW Performance 200 on Friday.
The No. 75 Honda Performance Development/Children’s Tumor Foundation Honda Civic Si was the top-finishing Honda in the 2.5-hour event which opened up the 2015 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge season.
Gimple, who now takes on the role of closing driver in 2015, watched on from the pit lane as Holton took the green flag from ninth on the grid. Holton ran among the top-10 throughout the opening stint before pitting to hand the car over to Gimple to anchor to the finish.
I’m really excited about the new Audi, it has really good potential,
The No. 75 Honda Performance Development/Children’s Tumor Foundation Honda Civic returned to the
track with Gimple at the wheel with just under an hour and 20 minutes yet to run. Following the green flag pit stop, Gimple re-entered the track 16th in the order as he looked to move his way forward.
The Compass360 crew asked Gimple to save fuel and Gimple performed flawlessly to take the Honda to a seventh place finish.
“We weren’t expecting that yellow to come out, we were expecting to do a second stop,” said Gimple. “When the safety car came out, I was immediately saving fuel. When we went back to green, I kept giving the team fuel numbers. With about half an hour left, they radioed that I was good to go on fuel, but by that time we’re pretty sure the diff was starting to go so it was starting to get a little more difficult to get the car rotated and power down. Seventh is not bad, we’re the highest finishing Honda – so we’ll take it. We earned valuable points toward the championship today so we’ll take them and move on to Sebring.”
Gimple returns to race action in March when the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge stages Round 2 of the Championship at Sebring International Raceway. Gimple and the Compass360 Racing team will debut its new Audi S3 in the next round of competition.
“I’m really excited about the new Audi, it has really good potential,” said Gimple. “It’s going to be a development year, so we might have some teething issues. But if we don’t have any teething issues at all, I think the Audi is going to do really well at quite a few tracks we go to this year, so I’m really excited about it.”
