Pagerey wins at Mosport
BOWMANVILLE, Ontario - Pole winner Mitch Pagerey, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., drove flag-to-flag to capture his first career Patron GT3 Challenge by Yokohama win following Saturday's Round Nine race at Mosport International Raceway. Pagerey followed his Round Nine win with a solid third place performance in Sunday's Round 10 race.
Pagerey, who tested at Mosport in July, returned to Canada's largest motorsports complex and did not waste any time topping the speed chart. In fact, by the second practice, he was the fastest by more than half a second over the next quickest driver. From there, he parlayed his fast practice time to into the pole winning time of 1:37.099 (91.169 mph) under wet track conditions. It was Pagerey's first qualifying pole and second pole position overall in as many races.
In Round Nine, Pagerey jumped out to an early lead in the No. 23 Alex Job Racing Porsche GT3 Cup. But, with the Patron GT3 Challenge Championship point leader Bob Faieta and three-time race winner Martin Snow right behind him, Pagerey knew he could not afford to make any mistakes. And, he didn't. Pagerey won by 1.143-seconds over Faieta giving him his first career Patron GT3 Challenge win.
"We got off to an early lead," Pagerey said. "Snow and Faieta battled on the first lap and that helped put some distance between me and them. Faieta is very good. I knew I could not make any mistakes. Thanks to Alex Job Racing, Patron, Porsche Motorsports, and Yokahama, we were quick all weekend.
"It feels great to get our first win and we definitely celebrated it. I still have a lot to improve on and I am committed to getting better in every aspect moving forward."
In Round Nine, Pagerey turned the second fastest race lap with a 1:24.180 (105.160 mph). This lap time was good enough to put him on the front row, alongside polewinner Snow, for Round 10. With another front row start, Pagerey looked poised to sweep the weekend. But unfortunately, a miscue on the pace lap cost him several spots before he took the green flag.
When the race started, the outside temperature was fairly cool, which also meant the track was cold. Pagerey knew that if he was going to get a good start he would have to get some heat in his also cold tires. In an effort to warm the tires on a cold track, he was a little too aggressive and spun the car on the pace lap. He dropped several spots before the green.
"The track was cold and I had a little mishap on the out lap, while trying to get the temperature up in my Yokahama tires," Pagerey said of his Round 10 start. "I lost several positions before the green.
"At the start, Alex [Job] just told me to 'do what I love to do.' So, I put my head down and drove through the traffic. I want to give Galen Bieker a compliment for racing so clean. It took half the race for me to overtake him and finish third."
"Overall, it was a pretty good weekend," Job said. "It was great to finally get Mitch a win. He and the team have worked very hard to get it. I am also extremely proud of the fact that he earned his first qualifying pole.
"Mitch is definitely showing a lot of speed in just his rookie season. Though we did not get the results we wanted at Road America, it was nice to see him bounce back. Mitch showed the same kind of speed at Mosport that he showed last month at Road America. And, this win and pole just shows that he continues to improve."
In just his first Patron GT3 Challenge season, Pagerey has one win, four podiums, seven top-five, eight top-10 finishes and two poles. He is currently fifth in the Championship point standings. Faieta leads with 188 points, followed by Snow (170), Bieker (134), Darrell Carlisle (124), and Pagerey (117).
The Patron GT3 Challenge by Yokohama Series next heads to Road Atlanta Sept. 24-26 for the Petit Le Mans race weekend.
