TRG IMSA GT3 Drivers Qualify at Sebring
Sebring, Florida -- TRG's fleet of six GT3 Cup cars showed well in qualifying today for tomorrow's 45-minute IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge presented by Michelin race.
Carl Akins, Laguna Beach, California 32 997 GT3 Cup Car
Carl Akins in the number 32 TRG entry qualified with a time of 2:21.439 and will start in the 21st position in the 997 field. "Things haven't been going that great. We have had some small car issues, but the TRG guys are on top of it and I am enjoying the weekend. I have a 997 on order, so I am driving one of Kevin's cars this weekend and the transition from the 996 to the 997 takes a few laps to get used to, like the sequential shift and no ABS. I like Sebring, I was here last year at an event and it is an exciting weekend with everything going on."
John Bibbo, Elkhart, Indiana 51 996 GT3 Cup Car
John Bibbo ran a time of 2:18.646 and will start tenth in the 996 field. "I am picking up speed with the help of our driving coach Andy Lally and Kevin. I have watched many races here and I didn't think I would like driving the circuit, but I have really enjoyed it so far. I was here with the PCA group a few weeks back so the layout is not totally foreign to me."
Hima Maher, Calgary Alberta, Canada 66 996 GT3 Cup Car
Hima Maher driving the number 66 car qualified fourth in class with a time of 2:15.477. Coming back from an on track incident in yesterday's final practice session where he was hit by an errant competitor, he was able to rebound and has a good starting position for the race. "In yesterday's practice a fellow competitor spun in front of me exiting turn seven and got into my right front. The guys were able to get it back together, so the damage wasn't too bad. I had only done about 19 laps prior to qualifying, but I have a good starting spot and the plan is to win."
Paul Camusi, Chico, California 71 997 GT3 Cup Car
Paul Camusi put in a time of 2:19.900 to start from the 12th row tomorrow. "I have been to Sebring three times in the past with club events. But the speed of the Challenge guys is higher than the typical club weekend and a little more intense. I am from Northern California so I have a lot of laps at Sears Point and Laguna Seca. I had a good run at Laguna last year as I was able to pick through the carnage. Andy and Kevin are a really big help in coaching us around here."
Bob Heniff, Chicago, Illinois 11 997 GT3 Cup Car
Bob Heniff posted a qualifying time of 2:15.868 and will start 21st. "We are in the ball park in qualifying, about halfway within the field. I like Sebring, however I am new to the 997 so that is taking some getting used to, the shifting, the braking, etc. I really like the torque of the motor. As an event, it is great to be apart of such a big racing weekend."
Michael Solley, Destin, Florida 67 997 GT3 Cup Car
Mike Solley had some car trouble in qualifying and will start from the back of the grid. "Everyone with TRG have been great, they really do a nice job. I have been Sebring several times with my T1 car, did Skip Barber events as well as with my 996GT car. The weekend has been great, I just would like some more track time. However, the whole organization from IMSA is terrific, I had to miss the drivers meeting and the chief steward was nice enough to give me my own, great!"
"We have had a good weekend so far," said TRG's Kevin Buckler. "We are running both 997s and 996s and our guys have done a good job in practice and qualifying. We have had some issues but nothing out of the ordinary on such a big weekend with a full field of cars. I am really proud of all of the guys and we are looking forward to a great race tomorrow."
The seven race IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge will traverse the country, visiting top racing facilities including Sebring, Mid-Ohio, Utah's Miller Park, Road America, Mosport, Road Atlanta and finally Laguna Seca. The race includes two groups for identically prepared GT3 997 and 996 Cup cars.
Round one of the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge will take the green flag at 3:30 p.m. EST for their 45-minute race on Friday, March 17th.
