Elton Julian's 24 Hours -----------------------
American-born/European-racer Elton Julian did a terrific job for the Euromotorsport team driving the Ferrari 333SP to 8th place overall, and second in the IMSA World Sports Car class. Elton never got a chance to rest, let alone sleep, as he drove 11.75 of the 24 hours himself, including a 4.5-hour stint in the middle of the night. That in itself was an awesome feat because the 20 year-old has NEVER driven in a sports car race and has NEVER raced at night. In fact, his first time in the Ferrari 333SP was in practice at Daytona on Thursday.
He only made one mistake, hitting the end of the pit wall, but it wasn't entirely his fault: As he told me during a radio interview conducted just hours after the race, the car had stopped many times to repair various problems on with car, but the team could not fix a problem with the starter so the car was push-started after every stop. On one certain occasion, the car was push-started and the throttle got stuck and sent him on a wild ride down pit lane where the Ferrari scraped the wall! Aside from that, a fine performance, Elton!
I asked Elton if the team still had plans to go to Le Mans and he said that the situation is still unclear. It is my belief that the Ferrari factory will have something to say, and after only one car finished Daytona, I'd be surprised to see them in the 24 du Mans. I also asked if the rumors were true about him perhaps racing some Indy cars this year and he said that it was up to Euromotorsport, which led me to believe that his racing contract is with Antonio Ferrari's team, even though he is still contracted with the Larrousse F1 team as a test driver. When asked for an F1 update, Julian was quick to state the team's financial situation "is no secret." He added, there are lots of rumors but nothing final as of yet.
