Huge IMSA test kicks off at Daytona for Rolex 24
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (Jan. 9) -- The biggest International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) pre-season test session ever opens Friday at Daytona International Speedway as more than 80 Exxon Series and Endurance Championship sports cars will take three days to prepare for the Feb. 1-2 Rolex 24 At Daytona. More than 10 prototype Exxon World SportsCars are expected, including Wayne Taylor's defending Rolex 24 winning Olds R&S Mk. III and the R&S factory-supported customer car of former GTS racer Eduardo Dibos; a pair of Ford R&S Mk. IIIs for Daytona Finale winner Dyson Racing; and up to three Ferrari 333 SPs. Among the WSC chassis making their Daytona debuts are the Ford Kopf Keiler KII of California vintage racer David Kopf, and the BMW URD driven by German Armin Hahne. The Olds R&S Mk. III driven a year ago by Canadian Indy car driver Ross Bentley, among others, will appear with a four-man Italian lineup including former F1 pilot Alex Caffi. In the Exxon GT Presented by Virgin Interactive Series, making their first Daytona appearance will be the Callaway C7R and Acura NSX GT cars, as well as a pair of Saleen Ford Mustangs entered in the new GTS-2 and GTS-3 classes. With the defending champion Brix Racing Olds Aurora team not slated to return, the GT contest is wide open with a strong group of Porsche 911 Turbos lining up against the Chevrolet Callaways and Camaros and a variety of Oldsmobiles. In GTS-3, Porsches again outnumber the crowd, but three of the track record holding BMW M3s are entered for the test. A section of the Oldfield Grandstand will be open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at no charge with access through the DAYTONA USA lobby.
