March 2 - Sportcar racer Nino Vacarella born (1933).

- Randy Anderson sets NHRA Top Alcohol Funny Car national record of 253.73 mph at Texas Motorplex (1996).

March 3 - Sportscar racer Pet Halsmer born (1944).

- Mario Andretti wins 35-lap TQ feature race at Teaneck, New Jersey, USA (1962).

March 4 - NASCAR great Buck Baker born (1919).

March 5 - Ken Tyrrell, long time Formula One team owner, born (1924).

        - Argentine road racer Domingo Bucci is critically injured in the
          Arrecifes Road Race in Argentina.  He dies two days later (1933).

March 6 - NHRA dragracer Eddie Hill born in Longview, Texas, USA (1936).

- Mario Andretti drives a Ferrari to his first Formula One win in the South African Grand Prix at Kyalami (1971).

March 7 - Janet Guthrie, the first woman to race in the Indianapolis 500, born (1938).

Correction to last week's column: Bobby Ball died on February 27, 1954 (not 1953), ONE YEAR and 54 days after his accident at Carrell Speedway in Gardenia, California.
