SCCA Prorally Legend Buffum Inducted into Off-Road Hall of Fame

TOPEKA, Kan. (May 17, 2004) -- Sports Car Club of America ProRally legend John Buffum has been selected as one of six inductees into the 2004 class of the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame.

On April 27th, the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame (ORMHOF) voting committee assembled for the first time in 28 years to review nominees for 2004 induction into the Hall of Fame. The nominations, which were submitted through a variety of groups, associations, sanctioning bodies and event promoters from the off-road community throughout the United States, were reviewed by a voting committee that included members from Off-Road Racing, Four-Wheeling, Rally and Sand Sports.

A legend in professional Rally Racing, Buffum, 60, is the most successful driver in ProRally history with 117 National Event Wins and 11 SCCA ProRally Championships, including an undefeated season in 1987. Buffum is also the only American Rally driver to ever win a European Championship event, winning the Sachs Rally in Germany in 1983 and the Cyprus Rally in 1984.

After retiring as a full-time driver in 1988, his Colchester, Vt.-based Libra Racing outfit continues winning championships, capturing the SCCA ProRally Championship eight times (most recently in 2000) in Buffum-prepared and managed Audi Quattro S-2, Hyundai Elantra and Hyundai Tiburon vehicles with his stepson, Paul Choiniere, behind the wheel.
