BELLEVILLE, Kan. (July 16, 2001) - Mark Passerrelli got low, with Ron 'Sleepy' Tripp riding high on the 29th lap of the 1984 Belleville Midget Nationals finale and the rest was Passerrelli's race.

Passerrelli and Tripp went high into the fourth corner side-by-side. Passerrelli came up against Tripp, tagged him, sent him into the rail and passed him to finish the remaining 10 laps in the lead.

Tripp had led the race from the beginning but after bumping with Passerrelli and the rail a couple more times trying to regain the lead, he fell to third with Bruce Field taking second.

A young new face to the Belleville High Banks was Californian Robby Flock. Flock showed that despite his youth, he knew how to drive, taking sixth in the championship and winning the Saturday night trophy dash.

Another new name to the Nationals was Tommy White and he too proved he had what it takes to win by taking the Friday preliminary feature, but didn't run well in the finals with a 12th-place finish.

The other trophy dash winners were Jon Backlund on Thursday and Billy Shuman on Friday.

In the Thursday main event, Gary Howard apparently broke something on his car on the first lap in turn 1 and his car suddenly flipped end-over-end high in the air, landing outside the rail.

Howard was taken to the hospital and released with only minor injuries.

The crew went to work on the car and brought in Kansas ace Jon Johnson to try and qualify Saturday through the heats for the finals. Johnson was able to qualify and went on to take 17th in the finals in the reconstructed midget.
