Unser will compete in the 82nd "Race to the Clouds"
Colorado Springs, CO -- June 7, 2004 -- The Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb today announced that Robby Unser will be back to try for an unprecedented 9th victory during the 82nd running of the "Race to the Clouds". Unser will drive a custom built Subaru WRX Impreza for Mr. Koseki of Japan and sponsors Heuberger Motors, Falcon Tire Company, Mastercraft Tools, Auto Smart and Best Westerns "The Pikes Peak Inn".
"It's been awhile since I've been back to the mountain," said Unser. "There have been a lot of changes that have happened on the hill, there's a lot of asphalt now. The car is going be quite quick. We have quite a lot of horsepower in fact a lot for one of those types of cars. For me it's an extreme honor to drive for Mr. Koseki. He's owned cars and driven cars at Pikes Peak for years. I think it's going to be fun and I'm really looking forward to it."
Unser was scheduled to drive for Mr. Koseki in 2003 however the specially built Subaru WRX Impreza never made it past customs in Japan and thus never arrived for the race. Mr. Koseki vowed at that time that he would have a car for Unser in time for the 2004 Falken Tire Pikes Peak International Hill Climb.
"Robby, I'm sorry. I love you," said Mr. Koseki during the 2003 awards banquet. "I will build you another race car. You will race for me next year. This I promise"
Unser in his own right has an incredible record on Pikes Peak. He comes from a long family history in American Auto Racing. He has time and again proven his natural born talent as a winning driver.
Unser has raced the Indianapolis 500 twice placing 5th his rookie year and 8th in 1999. He won Indy Racing Leagues prestigious title "Rookie Of The Year" for the 1998 season. Robby is an FIA Hill Climb Champion, American Indy Car Series winner, and has successfully raced Stock Cars, Sports Cars, Trucks and Sprint Cars. His proudest moments and most gratifying accomplishments are in his own self-built racing machines that broke records on Pikes Peak.
During the lunch break at this year's race Mainstream Productions Inc. will showcase the sport of drifting. Falken Tire drivers Calvin Wan, Yoshinori Koguchi and Seigo Yamamoto will drift the paved section of the famed Pikes Peak Highway. On June 27th the Drift Showoff continues at Pikes Peak International Raceway with a professional drifting exhibition, clinic, and competition. Drivers from across the U.S. are planning to compete in this historic event.
